HUB - Better Together (2nd Phase)

This is the second phase of the HUB - Better Together project, to support children and women in Hatay. The catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023, in southeast Turkey and Syria and the surrounding regions, resulted in over 50,000 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure, leaving many without homes, schools, and community spaces. This initiative was born out of the urgent need for a space where healing, learning, and personal growth can occur. Established to respond to the aftermath of Hatay's February 2023 earthquakes, the hub offers a range of workshops, educational sessions, and counseling services. These programs are dedicated to helping women and children from the affected communities to recover psychologically and build resilience for the future.

Supporting Earthquake-Affected Communities

In response to the ongoing impact of the earthquake, the "Better Together" project provides critical support and hope for children and women in the Subaşı Container Settlement Area in Defne. This dedicated space, comprising three interconnected containers, includes a play area for children aged 2-10 and a study and library area for those aged 10-18. Equipped with a kitchen, restrooms, and an accessible restroom for individuals with disabilities, it offers a safe, welcoming environment for all.

Our Base for Community Engagement

‍The Better Together project serves as Design+Peace's central hub within the settlement. With 90 containers housing families in the area, we connect individually with each child and woman, addressing their daily needs, challenges, and social support requirements. By listening to residents and, when needed, directing them to appropriate resources, we help identify and implement effective solutions.

Building a Social Solidarity Center

‍Our primary goal is to establish a center of social solidarity where children and women can gather, share experiences, and find support in a safe, communal space. Through regular visits and partnerships with community organizations, we host activities and create impactful programs that foster personal and social growth.

Empowering Through Programs and Events

Over the past year, we've organized theater performances and Career Days as part of our Art Ambassadors program, supporting youth in their educational and professional development. Ongoing mentorship services and exam preparation materials are provided to 7th, 8th, 11th, and 12th-grade students to aid in their academic journeys.

New Initiatives for 2024-2025

‍This year, we are launching art workshops for women in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University. Additionally, with the support of the Blue Butterflies Children's Rights Community, we are organizing both educational and artistic activities to increase awareness of children’s rights and encourage personal development.

Expanding Access to Knowledge

‍Our library, a space of knowledge and exploration for children and youth, continues to grow through book donations and educational materials. By expanding this resource, we aim to enhance learning opportunities and inspire hope for a brighter future.

Strengthening Social Solidarity

‍The "Better Together" project is a step forward in fostering social solidarity in Hatay and building a resilient future. We are committed to expanding our reach with the support of individuals and institutions, striving to empower more children, women, and families on this journey to recovery.
